history

Unimarkt branch in Helpfau-Uttendorf

In 1970 regional wholesalers from Upper Austria merged to form "United UNITAS Wholesale Upper Austria GesmbH" (VUOG). 250 private grocery stores supplied by VUOG operated under the UNITAS brand. In 1975 Unimarkt was born. The branch line founded by UNITAS under this new brand was intended as a local supplier to counteract the extinction of the grocery stores as a result of increasing market concentration. Between 1975 and 1983, 46 university stores were opened. The rapid expansion with different branch sizes, which did not allow a uniform appearance, put a strain on the development. In 1983 the entire UNITAS organization with all university stores was taken over by Pfeiffer Wholesale Traun. A consistent restructuring program began. The branch network was initially reduced from 46 to 15 university stores. At the same time, a comprehensive process of strategic realignment began. In the 1986/87 financial year, the 15 new stores achieved more sales than the 46 old ones in 1983. In 1996, the 50th store was finally opened. In 1999 Unimarkt developed the first real franchise system in the Austrian food trade and took over 9 franchising partners from the Pfeiffer Group. For the 30th birthday in 2005, the opening of the 100th branch was already being considered. In 2010 there were over 112 locations and over 1,600 employees. Two years later the first branch was opened in Carinthia . A wave of expansion started in 2013. The majority of the Upper Austrian Zielpunkt stores were converted into Unimarkt stores. The number of locations increased to 131 in 2014, and the online shop was launched. Furthermore , as the first of its kind, a multi-channel store was founded in Wels on Ringstrasse. In 2017, Unimarkt is also set to become the first grocery retailer in Austria to offer nationwide delivery via an online shop.

Unimarkt is part of the Unimarkt Group, which also includes Nah & Frisch, Pfeiffer Wholesale, Land Leben auf and Pfeiffer Logistik.

Unimarkt is currently represented in five federal states with 126 stores (63 branches / 63 franchise partners). Unimarkt has a strong focus on regionality and works with hundreds of bakers, meat and sausage producers and small farms in the federal states.

Unimarkt has been operating an online shop since November 2014 and offers the Austria-wide shipping of groceries.

Unimarkt is a member of the MARKANT Austria purchasing cooperation , which includes the Nah & Frisch group with its wholesalers Pfeiffer, Kastner , Kiennast and Wedl . According to the Nielsen census of 2010, the Markant Group has a market share of around 5.2% in the Austrian food retail sector, with around 3.7% being contributed by the Pfeiffer / Unimarkt Group.

This purchasing cooperation can also be seen, for example, in the low-cost label Jeden Tag , which should include 400 items in the final stage and is in the same price segment as the S-Budget and Clever brands. Markant's own brand is not only offered by the above-mentioned members (including the Unimarkt), MPreis is also involved in this project.

In April 2017 it became known that all branches would be sold to independent retailers according to the franchise principle. The latter are currently being sought. By 2020, 100 of the 131 branches are to be run independently. 50 of them are already franchise partners.

In March 2019 it was announced that the only branch in Carinthia will be closed. Thus, Unimarkt is only represented in five federal states.
