Atuona

Atuona is the capital of the island of Hiva Oa and the municipality of Hiva Oa of the Marquesas archipelago in French Polynesia , as well as the larger, western of the two sub-municipalities ( commune associée ), which also includes the uninhabited island of Mohotane in the southeast with the offshore island of Terihi .

The village at the foot of the Mont Temetiu mountain (1190 meters) lies in the bay of Atuona .

The village became known as the last long residence of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel , who spent the last years of their lives in Atuona and are buried in the Calvary cemetery.

The place is through an airport u. a. connected with the capital Papeete .
