Foreign trade association of the German retail trade

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Foreign Trade Association of German Retailers (AVE) is the central organization of importing retailers in Germany. It was founded in Cologne in 1952 and relocated to Berlin in 2015 . The AVE represents the foreign trade interests of the German retail trade, which is dependent on the smooth importation of consumer goods of all kinds as part of its global purchasing policy. In addition, the association is committed to compliance with social and environmental standards in the international supply chain and in the supplier countries.

Members

The members of AVE include internationally active German trading companies with a total annual turnover of around 230 billion euros, which are among the market leaders in their industry and also set standards in the areas of corporate governance and sustainability . In addition, the AVE has associations from trade , medium-sized businesses and the textile sector among its members.

organization

Matthias Händle, partner at Peter May Family Business Consulting, has been president since 2008. The Presidium also consists of Johannes Merck ( Otto GmbH & Co. KG ) and Karl-Josef Sedlmeyer ( Adidas AG ).

In September 2017, the German Trade Association (HDE) took over the management of AVE. The operative managing director is Kai Falk (managing director for communication and sustainability at HDE), who reports to HDE managing director Stefan Genth. The cooperation between the two associations took place with the aim of enabling an even more effective representation of the industry on foreign trade and trade policy issues and of bundling the activities to achieve sustainable supply chains.

tasks

As the voice of the importing retail trade in Germany on trade policy issues as well as customs and foreign trade law , the AVE represents the interests of the industry at national political level vis-à-vis the Federal Government and the German Bundestag . In particular, there are close contacts with the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) , the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA) .

In addition, the AVE is a supporting association of the Eastern Committee of German Business , which represents the interests of German companies in Eastern Europe and brings its expertise in the field of import promotion to the Advisory Board of the Import Promotion Desk (IPD). In addition, the AVE is involved in various committees and, among other things, participates in the European policy work of the Federal Association of German Employers' Associations (BDA) .

Core issues

Trade and Customs Policy

The AVE advocates a liberal trade policy for the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union . In the interests of its members, it rejects tariff and non-tariff trade barriers and promotes efforts to further expand liberal world trade . The economic importance of imports is emphasized and imports are seen as an important guarantor of the high purchasing power and the favorable price level in Germany and thus as an essential basis of prosperity. Imports also contribute to prosperity in the supplier countries.

Social and ecological responsibility in the international supply chain

For this purpose, AVE founded the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) back in 2003 , an industry initiative for retailers to improve social standards in global supply chains.

AVE is also a member of the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles , founded in 2014 , a partnership of around 150 companies , associations , non-governmental organizations , trade unions and standard organizations as well as the German Federal Government . The actors came together in 2014 to jointly implement improvements along global value chains in the textile industry.
