The place was named after the poem The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith , which describes Auburn , England as the most lovable village in the area .
Auburn likes to refer to itself as the most multi-cultural community in Australia. The originally Anglo-Celtic population was slowly being replaced by a high percentage of immigrants from China , Turkey and Lebanon . The three predominant religions in Auburn are Islam (43%), Catholicism (10%) and Hinduism (9%). 16% of the population are non-denominational.
