from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aue Stagecoach Inn is a complex of three buildings built in the 19th century by the German immigrant Max Aue in Texas . It is located at the intersection of Boerne Stage Road and I-10 , in Leon Springs in Bexar County . The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 1979 and are an example of traditional Texas architecture .

The building complex

Max Aue (* 1826 in Anhalt-Köthen ) emigrated to Texas in 1852. He bought a piece of land from John O. Meusebach and built three buildings on it over time.

Saltbox house

In 1855 Max Aue built a one-and-a-half- story Saltbox house made of broken limestone . There was a two-room shop on the first floor. An outside staircase led to the cellar below. An internal staircase led to the upper floor where Aue lived. The building was at the stop of the stagecoach route from San Antonio to Boerne . In the 1970s, the building was renovated and expanded to be used as a restaurant.

Dogtrot log cabin

When Max Aue married Emma Topperwin in February 1857, he built a two-part, one-story, plastered Dogtrot log house made of cedar wood as a new family residence . As the family grew, the log cabin was expanded. This building was listed on the San Antonio Project of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1968 . The building, equipped with a clay floor and two chimneys, is 8 × 17 meters in size according to this survey and consists of trunks with a diameter of 12 to 18 centimeters.

Greek Revival Hotel

Max Aue built a two-story building in the Greek Revival style of the Antebellum architecture in 1878 . It served as a hotel for travelers along the Stagecoach route. Unlike the original Saltbox house, this building had the family living space on the ground floor. The guest rooms were on the first floor. The two-story porch was built in the Victorian style . When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was built in 1886 , the rails were laid just 45 meters from the Aue Hotel. The Dogtrot log cabin was later connected to the hotel's ground floor.
