On the trail of a suicide is a German-language novel written under the name Tezer Kiral by the Turkish author Tezer Özlü from 1982, which was first published in 1983 in Turkish in Turkey. The author had previously received the literature prize of the city of Marburg for the German-language manuscript .

Emergence

In the footsteps of a suicide , a Turkish author in Berlin wrote in German who was already able to translate German when she came to Germany as a DAAD scholarship holder in the early 1980s . At the time the work was written, German-language novels were an isolated phenomenon in German-Turkish literature . Emine Sevgi Özdamar began extensive attempts at writing in German around the same time as Özlü, but initially in the form of plays. Tezer Özlü later arranged a Turkish translation of the novel himself based on her German manuscript.

The novel, which in the Turkish version was freely translated as “Journey to the End of Life”, tries to trace a person's suicide. In the process, he reveals the light and dark sides of the life of the person concerned in pictorial language, and feels his fears and hopes. The question soon arises whether this life inevitably led to suicide or whether there would have been a way back to life.

On the trail of a suicide of its creation was awarded the prize for literature in university city of Marburg and the district Marburg-Biedenkopf . In 1984 the novel was published in Turkey under the title Hayatın Ucuna Yolculuk . It was also edited and performed here as a play. The origin of the novel in Germany has been illuminated many times in Turkish literary studies. There was no regular publication of the award-winning German-language manuscript.
