Live and act

Tezer Özlü is a sister of Demir Özlü and Sezer Duru . She attended the Catholic, Austrian St. Georgs College in Istanbul . From 1963 she worked as a writer of prose and as a literary translator, translating works by Italo Svevo , Franz Kafka and Cesare Pavese into Turkish. She was a long-time employee of the Turkish-German Cultural Advisory Board and Goethe Institute in Istanbul. In the early 1980s she came to West Berlin as a DAAD scholarship holder .

At the German-Turkish authors' meeting held in (West) Berlin in 1980 , Kıral took on the role of simultaneous interpreter and translator for four days, almost continuously , as the city of Berlin had not provided an interpreter for the event for financial reasons.

In Germany, Özlü wrote a German-language novel, On the Trail of a Suicide (1982), for which she was awarded the literary prize of the university town of Marburg and the Marburg-Biedenkopf district .

Her Turkish novel Çocukluğun soğuk geceleri was translated into German by the well-known Turkologist Wolfgang Riemann and was published in 1985 by the special Berlin publisher EXpress-Edition . In the same year a Dutch translation was published by the Utrecht publishing house Sjaloom . In 1989 the EXpress Edition published a German paperback edition. The autobiographical novel received critical and public recognition.

Tezer Özlü died on February 18, 1986 in Zurich.

In the 1980s, Özlü was counted among the most important younger representatives of Turkish women's literature alongside Aysel Özakin , Tomris Uyar and Nazlı Eray . Michael Krüger dedicated the poem Istanbul to the author while she was still alive , which appeared in his volume of poems Aus der Ebene (1982).
