Kleczew ( [ˈklɛt͡ʂɛf] ) (German Lehmstädt ) is a city in Poland in the Greater Poland Voivodeship . It is the seat of an urban and rural municipality .

Geographical location

Kleczew is located in the east of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, about 15 kilometers north of Konin .

history

Today's Kleczew received city charter under Magdeburg law on January 12, 1366 . In the 16th century, Germans and Jews moved into the city. In 1648 a fire destroyed large parts of the city. During the Second Partition of Poland , the place came to Prussia in 1793 . In 1807 it became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 part of Congress Poland . At the end of the 18th century, cloth production began to develop in Kleczew. During the January uprising there were clashes between insurgents of the city and Russian troops, the worst on June 10, 1863. In 1870 the place lost its city charter. After the First World War , the place became part of the re-established Poland and received city rights again in 1919. At the beginning of the Second World War marched on 12./15. September 1939 the German Wehrmacht in Kleczew and the place became part of the Wartheland . The approximately 1,000 Jews of the city were on 17./18. August deported and later murdered. In January 1945 the Red Army invaded the area and the place became part of Poland again. In 1977 Kleczew became the administrative seat of the Konin lignite mine , the largest in the Konin Voivodeship and later the Greater Poland Voivodeship.

Buildings

  • The Church of St. Andrew dates from the second half of the 14th century.
  • The synagogue, built between 1853 and 1868, is currently used as a cinema.
  • The Catholic cemetery was laid out at the beginning of the 19th century and is still in use.
  • The building of the city court was built in 1928/1929. Today it is used as a library.

Provincial road 264 runs through the city ( droga wojewódzka 264 ). This opens two kilometers northwest in the Voivodship Road 263 and ends in the south after 15 kilometers in Konin.

Kleczew has no rail connection.

The nearest international airport is Poznan-Ławica Airport , which is about 80 kilometers to the west.
