The Resurrection Cathedral ( Russian Вознесенский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Novocherkassk in Russia . The cathedral was built from 1811 to 1904 in the center of the city and is the seventh highest cathedral in Russia with a height of 74.7 meters. It offers space for 5000 people.

history

The foundation stone for the construction of the cathedral was laid as early as 1805. However, construction only began six years later on October 1, 1811. The design came from the Swiss architect Luigi Rusca . After Luigi Rusca left Russia in 1818, a certain Amvrosimov became the new architect.

Its design, however, proved not to be strong enough to support the main dome. Parts of the cathedral collapsed in 1846. This happened again in 1863 with the design of another architect. The construction of a third variant by AA Yashchenko was decided in 1891. The approval of Tsar Alexander III. was issued on March 24, 1891. The building was completed in 1904 and the consecration took place on May 6, 1905.

At the beginning of Soviet rule, the golden cladding of the domes was replaced by a simple iron cover . The sacred building was closed in 1934.

It was only shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union that the cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. The restoration began in 2001. On the 200th anniversary of the founding of Novocherkassk and 100 years after the foundation stone of the Resurrection Cathedral was laid, the restoration of the facade was completed in 2005.

architecture

The cathedral is a richly structured neo-Byzantine central building made of light-colored ashlar with a central dome and four corner towers as well as five other smaller domes. Three of the four short cross arms are closed by apses , the fourth is continued by a narthex-like , tower-crowned porch with the portal.
