The Resurrection Church Katernberg is a Protestant church in the north of the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . Along with the cemetery church , the church at Kolk , the community center at Am Eckbusch and the Katernberger clubhouse, it is one of five places of worship in the Evangelical Church Community of Elberfeld-Nord .

Building description

The church is a modern , simple hall church in the style of the New Objectivity . The north-facing nave is 23 meters long and 13 meters wide. The nave widens slightly in front of the choir; a small sacristy follows. On the north side it is closed by a semicircular apse , the south wall is characterized by a colorful glass window from the workshop of the Sisterhood of Mary Darmstadt, which shows the risen Christ. On the southwest side of the portal is a fifteen meter high bell tower, which ends with a simple saddle roof with a cross. Inside the tower is the entrance area and the access to the stairwell, three bronze bells hang in the belfry.

The church was built from white plastered brick , the tower was later clad with Eternit plates. The simple, low church hall offers space for 360 worshipers. A red carpet runs over the white tiles straight to the apse and, together with the pews made of light wood and the high windows, gives the church a very airy and open impression. The apse is dominated by a life-size crucifix , also made by the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary Darmstadt .

organ

The organ was built from 1956 to 1963 by Emil Hammer Orgelbau from Hanover and has seventeen stops on two manuals and a pedal . Organists were Helmut Mummenbrauer from 1955 to 1985 and Sabine Bredenbach from 1985 to 2018; Since then Damaris Meinefeld has been the organist.

Bells

Three bronze bells, g'-a'-c '', hang in the church tower; which were cast by the Rincker (Sinn) company.

history

At the beginning of the 1950s , the number of Lutherans living in the north of Elberfeld rose sharply, partly due to the constant expansion of the housing estates in the Nevigeser Strasse district . For them, the closest church they could reach was the Kreuzkirche in the northern part of Elberfeld; At times the cemetery chapel on the Bredtchen was also used for Sunday services. On the initiative of the church master of the Ev.-luth. Elberfeld community, Oskar Stodt, the Church of the Resurrection was built from 1953 to 1954 according to plans by the architect Hans auf der Heyde in an ensemble with a rectory and a kindergarten. The first pastor at the new church was Lic. Erich Riedesel. In 1964 the great Ev.-luth. Elberfeld community divided into six individual communities; the Church of the Resurrection belonged to the ev.-luth named after her. Resurrection parish. At the beginning of 1981, the Resurrection Church parish with the Ev.-ref. Parish Elberfeld-Nord to the new Ev. Parish Elberfeld-Nord united. After reconstruction of the basement in the 1980s, extensive renovation work was carried out on the interior in 1999; the presbyter's bench and the first two rows of pews were removed.
