Church of the Resurrection

The Resurrection Church is a Protestant church in the Ludwigshafen district of Oppau . It is already the seventh church at this point.

history

The first church in Oppau to be consecrated to St. Martin was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 808 . In 1556, the Palatine Elector Ottheinrich led the Lutheran confession. His successor Friedrich III. switched to Calvinism , after which the Oppau Church was almost entirely reformed and was finally assigned to the Reformed when the Palatinate church was divided in 1705.

The first church was destroyed by floods in 1243. Except for the foundation, it was made entirely of wood. The new church was built of stone, but it was also destroyed by floods in 1707. The successor building was built wider with the same length. It was also damaged several times by the water of the Rhine , so that the dilapidated church had to be demolished in 1827. The successor building had an L-shaped floor plan with the tower at an angle. In 1842 the church received an extension and the tower was given a new design. This church was destroyed in 1921 by the explosion of the Oppau nitrogen works .

The new building was inaugurated on June 24, 1923. The church was now much larger and already had the current floor plan. The plans for the building came from government master builder Schrade from Mannheim, the construction management was carried out by the architect Kullmann from Ludwigshafen. During the Second World War , this church was also destroyed after an air raid in 1943. The church was rebuilt in 1951/52 by Walter Blessing on the foundation walls, but in a different form . On the occasion of the inauguration on December 14, 1952, it was named Church of the Resurrection. In 2000 the church received an exterior renovation and an interior renovation in 2006.

description

The Resurrection Church is in the center of Oppau. It is a classical hall building . The half-retracted, 42-meter-high tower is arranged above the chancel. The nave is covered with a gable roof. There are five arched windows on each side. The three eastern yokes protrude and are structured with pilasters .

Inside there is a three-sided wooden gallery. Willy Oeser designed the window in the chancel . It shows Jesus with his wounds. The organ was built by Steinmeyer until 1957 . The instrument has 2,016 pipes and 24 registers on two manuals and a pedal. A bell from 1767 survived all the destruction and wars. It was the oldest bell in Ludwigshafen and was again repaired by BASF in 1947 . After being cracked, it was unusable and was converted into a baptismal font in 1978 . Today the ringing consists of four bells that were cast by the Bochum Association in 1954 :
