The abandoned quarry of Eppertshausen is an extensive natural monument in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse.

location

The natural monument "abandoned quarry" is located in the Messeler Hügelland natural area in the forest. It is located west of Eppertshausen, north of the district road 180 Eppertshausen - Messel . Its outer borders form the district road as well as the Hellwiesen-, Fuchsbau- and beech hill aisles.

history

Gravel was extracted in the former trachyte quarry until the mid-1930s. After that, the deeper parts developed into two ponds. A lot of ammunition from the Muna Münster was dumped in the water , and after 1945 the area served as a blasting site for a long time. From 1950 the waters were leased as fish ponds. By ordinance of May 27, 1959, the natural monument was placed under nature protection as a geological outcrop and wetland biotope . It was not until 1966–1972 that the area was delimited as planned.

description

The natural monument is located in a closed mixed forest. The damp bank edges are overgrown with marsh plants. The ponds are important as spawning waters for common toad , common frog , mountain newt , crested newt and pond newt . In some years there are numerous freshwater jellyfish in the water. Several species of dragonflies have been observed.

The protected area suffers from its illegal use as a wild bathing lake. There were also several oil spills because cars and motorcycles were sunk in the lake.
