Eye for an Eye is a 2011 crime film directed by Santiago Amigoréna. It was released on September 7, 2011 at the Venice Film Festival. The director wrote the script together with Nicolás Buenaventura.

action

The young policewoman Marie loses her husband and son in the hail of bullets from a drug war. From then on she seeks revenge. Her colleagues in the Canadian police force help her with her initial research. The trail of the perpetrator leads them to South America. As a modest backpacker, she met the family of the assassin Pablito Molina in the Argentine mountain village of Iturbe . The fact that his wife Lila lives in extremely primitive circumstances and has just become the mother of a boy arouses pity in Marie's otherwise bitter soul. Here she also learns that Pablito recently left for La Quiaca (on the border with Bolivia ). She travels after him.

On a foray through the city, she recognizes Pablito in the back seat of a drug-carrying truck and hitchhikes the vehicle. She then shoots Pablito's companion at a rest stop and gives him one last chance to justify his act. In a tear-choked voice, he asks her forgiveness. Allegedly he didn't know that there was a child in the car at the time of the crime - Marie's son Nicky. For the second time, Marie is overwhelmed by pity, which prevents her from retaliation. The emerging emotional pain lets her sink to the ground. She writhes in pain in the desert dust.

background

The idea for this film came from Santiago Amigorena during a stay in destroyed Beirut in 2006. He wanted to write a story about "forgiveness". His film Quelques Jours en Septembre (German DVD title: A Few Days in September - Time is running out ... ) was shown at a film festival in Beirut. The drama Eye for an Eye was filmed in Argentina , the director's home country, and in Québec, Canada . The weather conditions in the Argentine mountains were difficult. Temperature differences and sandstorms caused problems for the shooting team. Due to the thin air above 2500 m altitude, the leading actress suffered a headache for several days ( altitude sickness ). By the way, she has nothing in common with the character of Marie, she says.

Louis Craig was responsible for the special effects.

criticism

“The tough start leads (like the German title) on the wrong track: Instead of an orgy of action, the Argentine Santiago Amigorena sends his avenging angel on a journey that reveals the soul of the country and its people in a very unfrench, taciturn way - pictures and situations speak for themselves themselves. The matter remains exciting despite some lengths. "
