Augmentation (medicine)
Under augmentation is understood in sports medicine , traumatology and orthopedics a therapeutic method. Foreign materials are used that support ligaments or tendons in their function in order to enable functional therapy. The augmentation can be performed surgically , for example with plastic or metal implants, or conservatively with a tape bandage .
Augmentation is also understood to mean physical enlargements, such as breast enlargements or
- the combination of several drugs to increase their effectiveness; Example: lithium augmentation in lithium therapy or
- the increase in blood pressure in the aorta due to pulse wave reflection .
In dentistry , augmentation is understood to mean the reconstruction of degraded jawbones using one's own bone or foreign material, in particular to create enough bone so that a dental prosthesis can be stabilized on the alveolar ridge or a dental implant can be inserted. Augmentation procedures are also used in periodontics to rebuild alveolar bones that have been degraded by periodontitis .
