Ray Carney criticizes the American film critics in that he accuses them of being based only on first impressions, while the lower quality only becomes apparent with a detailed analysis and emerges after watching films several times. This leads to the fact that the really valuable American films and directors are almost completely ignored.

While mainstream film reviews focused on works like Star Wars , Raiders of the Lost Ark , A Doomed Affair , Thelma and Louise , 9 1/2 Weeks , Pretty Woman, and The Silence of the Lambs , the true masterpieces were completely lost.

Carney, on the other hand, counts among the really valuable films: Wanda by Barbara Loden , Killer of Sheep by Charles Burnett , Mikey and Nicky by Elaine May , Milestones by Robert Kramer and Andy Warhol's Trash by Paul Morrissey .
