Ernst August Bertheau (born August 10, 1799 in Hamburg , † May 31, 1881 in Potsdam ) was a German tobacco and cigar manufacturer and city councilor in Potsdam. In 1878 he became an honorary citizen of the royal capital.

Life

He was born as the son of Henry Auguste Bertheau (1773–1831), a Hamburg wine wholesaler, and his (first) wife Catharina Sophie, born. Timmermann, (1705–1805) born. His father also acted as an authorized representative of the Hamburger Versorgungs- Tontine and the Hamburg Life Pension Association . The ancestors were Protestant Huguenots . A. Bertheau's grandfather François Diedrich Bertheau (1734–1826) was only able to acquire citizenship of the Hanseatic city . He was a grandson of the reformed church supporter Samuel Bertheau († 1716), who immigrated to Germany from France in 1685 .

Tobacco merchant and manufacturer

As a young man, Bertheau found his second home in Potsdam. In the years 1826 to 1865 Bertheau ran a tobacco factory, in which an extensive range of cigars was mainly produced, and he traded in tobacco and cigars. August Bertheau's cigar and tobacco factory became so well known beyond the royal seat of Potsdam that after his departure the company name “Bertheau, Aug., Successor, Potsdam” was chosen and the tobacco factory was successfully continued. For example, in 1871 this company processed 1,512 quintals of raw tobacco into cigars and tobacco by 180 employees. "Bertheau, Aug., Successor", Potsdam, took part in the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 with a large assortment of cigars. The tobacco factory "Bertheau, Aug., Successor" was still run in the 1880s by the owner Hermann Cavallery, who represented the company at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna.

City council in Potsdam

From 1865, Bertheau continued to work as a city councilor in Potsdam in his status as a reindeer . He was a member of the city council for several decades when, at the age of 80, he was awarded the dignity of an honorary citizen of Potsdam.

marital status

He was married to Henriette Bertheau (born January 25, 1814 in Itzehoe ), nee Eccarius.

The German Protestant theologian Carl Bertheau (1806–1886) was his half-brother, as was the German orientalist and exegete Ernst Bertheau (1812–1888). A half-sister of August Bertheau was Caroline Fliedner , nee Bertheau (1811-1892), from 1843 second wife of Theodor Fliedner and second head of the 1836 founded deaconess institution Kaiserswerth in a district of Düsseldorf .
