August Junker (folk singer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Junker (born May 28, 1871 in Munich ; † April 16, 1946 there ) was a Bavarian folk singer and director of the Singspielhalle.

Life

After attending school in his hometown of Munich, the son of a bell-maker master learned the trade, which he gave up after successful private appearances and as a club humorist at the age of 25 to become a folk singer. In 1898 he stood on the stage of the Munich "Colosseum" for the first time. Then Anderl Welsch hired him for the newly founded " Apollo Theater ", where he stayed for 20 years. Here he always appeared in his characteristic robe, with checked tailcoat and top hat, and also popularized the two suburban types "Lucke and Kare", which he sang in many couplets . In 1914 he and Alois Hönle took over the management of the "Apollo"; For a time he was also the director of the "Peterhof" Singing Games.

During this time he also discussed numerous sound carriers, both Edison cylinders and gramophone records , for various brands, often together with his partner Alois Hönle.

August Junker also acted in seven feature films, six silent and one sounding one; in three of them, which unfortunately have to be considered lost, as partners of Karl Valentin .

The Apollo Theater had to close its doors in 1928. After the mid-thirties, when the heyday of the folk singer stage came to an end, Junker also appeared in various cabarets and on cabaret stages such as the Simpl . Junker died on April 16, 1946 at the age of 75 in Munich.

In 2001 the Trikont-Verlag published a CD with recordings by August Junker and Alois Hönle under the title The Voices of the Suburbs 1901–1913 - Junker and Hönle.
