August Parcus

Ludwig August Parcus (born November 18, 1819 in Mainz , † July 16, 1875 in Darmstadt ) was a German banker and entrepreneur .

Life

August Parcus was born in 1819 as the son of the lawyer and politician Johann Jakob Parcus (1790-1854) and his wife Louise Katharina Adelaide Köler in Mainz. He studied law at the State University in Giessen . In 1846 he joined the Hessian Ludwig Railway. The private railway company had received the concession to build a train connection from Mainz to Ludwigshafen in 1845 . Parcus rose to the position of director of the Ludwigsbahn in 1852. The expansion of the Hessian Ludwig Railway began under the leadership of Parcus . In 1852, for example, the Darmstadt Bank for Trade and Industry was founded to finance the Bingen-Mainz-Darmstadt-Aschaffenburg railway line. In 1856 Parcus joined the management of the Darmstädter Bank for Commerce and Industry. At the same time he was a member of the board of the newly founded Bank for Southern Germany, based in Darmstadt. In the Hessian Ludwig Railway he kept a seat on the board of directors. In 1866 he became Vice President and the following year President of the Hessian Ludwig Railway, which he had a major influence in these offices. In 1862 he was a co-founder of the Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce .

August Parcus had been married to Margarethe Grebert (1829–1909) from Mainz since 1848. The marriage resulted in two daughters and four sons, u. a. Carl Parcus . Parcus died on July 16, 1875 in Darmstadt. He is buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt.

Honors

  • 1859: Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit Philip the Generous.
  • 1871: Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Ludwig.

His grave is listed as the honor grave of the city of Darmstadt. A street is named after him in the Johannesviertel in Darmstadt.
