August Pollmann (born November 15, 1813 in Alsdorf an der Sieg; † May 17, 1898 in Bonn ) was a German music teacher, apidologist (beekeeper) and teacher of agriculture .

Pollmann was the fifth of nine children of a cotton wool manufacturer and innkeeper and went to school in Altenkirchen . Temporarily tied to bed because of a foot ailment, he devoted himself to music, especially piano and guitar playing, and was trained by the music teacher Wendt, so that after his recovery he could settle in Bonn as a music teacher for piano, guitar and voice. At the same time he attended lectures on science, literature and history at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in 1845 from the University of Gießen with a dissertation on the human singing voice. phil.

Bees had already been kept in the father's house, and Pollmann also began breeding his own in Bonn. From 1863 he was active in the Westphalian-Rhenish Association for Bee and Silk Breeding, from 1864 to 1884 as a member of the board, and from 1878 to 1885 was the editor of the club's journal. As a result of this commitment, Eduard Hartstein , director of the Royal Prussian Agricultural College in Bonn-Poppelsdorf, asked him in 1868 to give lectures on beekeeping there. In 1894 he had to give up this job due to illness. He donated his books and magazines to the college library .

He attended numerous traveling events of German and Austro-Hungarian beekeeping associations, often on behalf of the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, and wrote numerous magazine articles and several books. He corresponded with Gregor Mendel and Dzierzon .

Pollmann is considered to be the inventor of the "bee cabinet", a compilation of preparations and other things related to the honeybee, its breeding and keeping as well as honey production, and the "bee herbarium" (compilation of the most important foraging plants of the honeybees).

He is the first to describe the bee races Apis mellifera carnica , Apis mellifera cypria and Apis mellifera caucasica .

His (second) wife accompanied him to his last lectures at the Poppelsdorf Academy because he could no longer walk alone on the street.
