August Skerl

Heinrich August Gottfried Skerl (born July 21, 1829 in Braunschweig ; † January 21, 1895 there ) was a German Lutheran theologian . From 1876 to 1895 he was pastor at the Katharinenkirche in Brunswick .

life and work

The son of a senior high school teacher studied theology in Göttingen and Jena from 1850 to 1853 . In Jena the church historian Karl von Hase was one of his most important teachers. He then worked as a private teacher in various houses, including the Loebbecke family in Dorstadt . From 1856 to 1863 he worked as an orphanage teacher in Braunschweig. In 1864 he married the adopted daughter of the Brunswick general and city superintendent Karl Hessenmüller († 1862), whose successor he was on January 10, 1864 as pastor at the St. Ulrici Church. On April 2, 1876, Skerl moved to the Braunschweig Katharinenkirche as pastor and became a permanent member of the regional synod . He had been a senior member of the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs since 1882 . In that year he became vice-president of the regional synod and member of the synodal committee. The University of Jena awarded Skerl an honorary theological doctorate in 1885. Since 1885 he was a member of the ducal high school commission. In 1892 he was awarded the Knightly Order of Henry the Lion .

Skerl supported charitable institutions, including the Gustav-Adolf-Verein , the Volkskindergarten and the Leopold Foundation. He campaigned for the establishment of new parishes and pastors in Braunschweig. These include the parishes of St. Johannis and St. Pauli, founded in the year Skerl's death, as well as the St. Jakobi parish, which was only established in 1905 .
