Locomotive trophy
The Locomotive Cup ( Russian Кубок Локомотива ; until September 2011: Opening Cup , Russian Кубок Открытия / Kubok Otkrytija) is an ice hockey trophy of the Continental Hockey League (KHL). The trophy is played between the previous year's winner of the Gagarin Cup and the previous year's finalist at the start of the season and is part of the regular KHL season. The Gagarin Cup winner has home rights.
The first edition of the then Kubok Otkrytija was contested by the two finalists of the last Superliga season . In the 2010/11 season , last year's finalist HK MWD Balaschicha , who merged with HK Dynamo Moscow after the season , was replaced by its successor club, OHK Dynamo . After almost the entire squad of Lokomotive Yaroslavl was killed in the plane crash near Yaroslavl , the KHL decided together with the players' union to rename the trophy to the Lokomotive Cup .
