The Megasport Arena ( Russian Ледовый дворец спорта на Ходынском поле , transcription Ledowy dworez sporta na Chodynskom pole ) on the Chodynka field is a multi-purpose hall in the Russian capital Moscow . The arena, which was completed at the end of 2006, can accommodate up to 13,926 spectators.

history

After no new larger sports halls were built in the largest city in Russia for decades - the "old" ones still come from the time of the Soviet Union - the city government decided to build a multifunctional hall after the 2007 Ice Hockey World Championship was awarded to Russia.

Construction began in November 2005 and the arena was officially opened on December 15, 2006. The tiers and boxes have a capacity of 12,126 seats, and up to 1,800 additional seats can be created inside the stadium.

use

The hall is mainly used by basketball and ice hockey teams. In 2007 the arena, together with the Mytishchi arena, hosted the 71st men's ice hockey world championship , which took place in Russia. In addition, the Final Four tournament of the CEV Champions League 2006/07 was held in the arena, where Tours Volley-Ball lost to VfB Friedrichshafen in the final. In January 2008, the PBK CSKA Moscow played a Euroleague game in the arena, which was almost sold out with almost 13,000 spectators. Since 2007, the arena has also hosted the Cup of Russia in figure skating . On October 13, 2007, the arena was the scene of the boxing match between the Russian Sultan Ibragimow and the American Evander Holyfield . The figure skating world championship took place there in 2011 . In 2018 the European title fights will take place in the hall.

The hall is also used for concerts . Among others, 50 Cent , Black Eyed Peas , Avril Lavigne and the Scorpions performed .
