Volleyball Champions League 2006/07 (men)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2006/07 season of the Volleyball Champions League began on September 27, 2006 with the group phase and ended with the final on April 1, 2007. 24 teams from 13 nations took part in the competition. The VfB Friedrichshafen became the first German team competition and achieved the triple.

Balance sheet

As in the previous season, the German champions VfB Friedrichshafen and the runner-up evivo Düren started as German representatives . Austria was again represented by the Hypo Tirol volleyball team Innsbruck and the Aon hotVolleys Vienna .

The VfB Friedrichshafen started with a 0: 3 defeat in Cuneo in the group stage, but won the next games and lost in Athens just barely in the fifth set. A clear 3-0 home win against Panathinaikos was the basis for reaching the next round. With a final win against the Italians, VfB secured group victory. In the play-off, Friedrichshafen prevailed against Noliko Maaseik and Sisley Treviso and reached the final four. There the German champion secured the title against Lube Macerata and Tours VB .

evivo Düren won their next two games against Podgorica and Innsbruck after a 2: 3 home defeat against Tours. Despite often good performances, it was then only enough to beat Innsbruck 3-0 in the second CL participation. With the 1: 3 in Podgorica, the runner-up missed the last chance to reach the play-off round.

Hypo Tirol Innsbruck benefited from a decision by the CEV . The European association rated the home game against Belgorod, which was actually lost 3: 0, with 3: 0 sets and 75: 0 points because the Russians (as in the 3: 0 in the following game against Tours) had used an unauthorized player. The win "at the green table" was the only success for the Austrians, who lost all other games.

The Aon hotVolleys Vienna could only win the home games against the teams from Piraeus and Sofia placed in front of them and were eliminated as the last group, like the Innsbruck team.

Group stage

In the draw on September 23, 2006, the qualified teams were divided into four groups with six participants each. The best three teams in each group and Ostrava as the best group fourth reached the next round.
