August de la Motte (born November 17, 1713 , † August 29, 1788 in Verden ) was a Kur-Braunschweigisch-Lüneburg lieutenant general and was known in the defense of Gibraltar in the years 1779 to 1783.

He took part in the Seven Years War as a staff officer in the infantry . For his careful behavior in the attack on Dillenburg on January 7, 1760, he received 100 Louisdors as a reward and at the siege of Kassel in the autumn of 1762 he was named with distinction. In 1775, he was a colonel with the command of three battalions of infantry heavy brigade in charge that King George III. took English wages and joined the garrison of Gibraltar. There they were supposed to replace troops from the garrison that were sent to North America to fight in the American War of Independence . Major general since 1776 , he took part with his brigade in the memorable three and a half year defense of the fortress of Gibraltar as third in command under General Sir George Elliot . Elliot has set a monument to his and his troops' achievements in his official correspondence. King George III recognized them with a number of excellent rewards. Returned to his fatherland in October 1784, he died of exhaustion in his garrison in Verden on August 29, 1788.
