August von Gall

August Freiherr von Gall (born September 18, 1872 in Lemgo ; † October 4, 1946 in Schänen ) was a German theologian and orientalist . He was an associate professor for theology at the University of Giessen .

Life

He came from the noble family of Barons von Gall. After attending grammar schools in Mainz and Darmstadt, he studied at the universities of Halle, Berlin and Gießen. He became a member of the Halle , Berlin and Giessen Wingolf . In 1910 he completed his habilitation at the University of Giessen, where he received an honorary professorship.

August von Gall worked on depictions of the kingdom of God in the Old Testament and in pre-Christian religions. But he was best known for his publication of the Samaritan Pentateuch . He used handwritten sources scattered in Europe and the Middle East as a basis. Later he dealt with the culture of the Aztecs and among other things brought out an annotated selection of Aztec medicine books in German.
