August von Klipstein

August Wilhelm von Klipstein (born June 7, 1801 in Hohensolms , † April 15, 1894 in Gießen ) was a German geologist, paleontologist and mineralogist.

Life

Klipstein, the son of the chief forest director Philipp Engel von Klipstein (1777–1866), studied at the Ruprecht-Karls-University . In 1821 he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg . After that he was at the Forest Science School in Fulda and the Hessian Ludwig University of Gießen until 1822 . In 1828 he received his doctorate in Erlangen. After that he was a district forester. In 1831 he became a teacher for practical forest science at the University of Giessen and in 1836 professor for mineralogy and geology. He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

From a sand pit leased by him in Eppelsheim, he and his friend Johann Jakob Kaup recovered the first upper skull of a dinotherium in 1835 , which at that time caused a sensation as a terrifying beast. He himself owned an extensive collection of fossils, especially from the Triassic of St. Cassian . After his death it was scattered (to Darmstadt, Bremen, London, Vienna, Budapest).
