August Ferdinand von Veltheim , from 1798 Count von Veltheim (born September 18, 1741 in Harbke , † October 2, 1801 in Braunschweig ) was a German mineralogist.

Life

August von Veltheim attended the education department in Berge Monastery from 1756 and received training in mining from Friedrich Anton von Heynitz in Zellerfeld from 1758 . From 1760 Veltheim studied at the University of Helmstedt and, after completing his cavalier journeys, entered the Braunschweig civil service as a chamber accessist in 1763. A year later he was appointed to the electoral chamber council.

In 1767 Veltheim moved to Clausthal as Bergdrost in the mining administration and in 1769 was appointed Deputy Mining Captain. In this office he was Claus Friedrich von Reden’s deputy and supervised the Upper Harz mining industry until 1779. In 1781 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . After his wife and son died, he retired in 1779. On this occasion, he was awarded the title of Royal British and Electoral Braunschweig-Lüneburg Mining Captain with Major General rank. In 1798 Veltheim received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helmstedt and was raised to the rank of count in the same year. On May 21, 1795, the Prussian Academy of the Arts appointed him an honorary member.

In retirement, Veltheim retired to his Harbke estate and mainly conducted botanical and mineralogical studies. In addition to these publications, Veltheim also has collections of anecdotes and works on the Egyptian Memnon column and Barberine vases.

In 1796 he was offered the post of Russian chief miner by Tsarina Catherine II , which he refused. As a member of the estates, Veltheim took part in the drafting of the provincial code of the Duchy of Magdeburg .
