August Ritter von Wotawa (born December 21, 1876 in Vienna , † May 23, 1933 in Linz ) was an Austrian politician.

Studies and professional career

August von Wotawa studied history and geography at the University of Vienna and then worked as a secondary school teacher. In addition to his teaching and administrative activities, he wrote articles about historical persons for the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity (for example about Didius Julianus ).

In the course of his work at the secondary school, Wotawa was involved in political associations, including since 1913 as managing director of the German-Austrian Central Office for People's Welfare. From 1914 to 1923 he was a member of the board of directors of the Realgymnasium in the state educational home in Vienna / Hietzing. In 1923 he was appointed President of the Austrian School Books Publishing House (since 1925 “Austrian Federal Publishing House for Education, Science and Art”). He remained in this office until the end of his life.

Wotawa was married and had two daughters.

Political career

In 1919, Wotawa was one of the founding members of the National Democratic Party , which in 1920 became part of the Greater German People's Party (GDVP). In this Wotawa was first chairman for Vienna and Lower Austria before he was elected chairman of the entire party at the Klagenfurt party conference in 1924. From 1927 he was a member of the National Council ( third legislative period ). In the National Council election in 1930 he was re-elected to the National Council ( 4th legislative period ) through the national economic bloc and land alliance . After his death, Johannes Schauer-Schoberlechner, next to the list, took over Wotawa's mandate in the National Council.
