Auguste Trilhe

Auguste Trilhe (born June 14, 1866 in Préserville, Haute-Garonne department , † May 3, 1930 in Toulouse ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, Trappist , canon , theologian and religious historian.

life and work

Auguste Trilhe, who went to school with the Jesuits of Toulouse, entered the Trappist monastery Sainte-Marie-du-Désert in Bellegarde-Sainte-Marie, Haute-Garonne, in 1883, took the religious name Robert and began (for life) with the study of the early Cistercian order history. In 1888 he had to leave the monastery for health reasons and was sent to Rome by the Bishop of Toulouse, Cardinal Florian Desprez (1807–1895), to continue his studies. After being ordained a priest there (1892), he received his three doctorates in 1895 (in philosophy, theology and canon law ) and worked as a priest in Toulouse. From 1900 to 1910 he was again a monk in the Désert monastery (now under Novice Master André Malet ), but then had to leave it again and in 1916 finally assumed the status of world priest of the diocese of Toulouse. From 1918 he was a professor of institutional law in the Catholic Institute of Toulouse (also Canon ). The project he directed to rebuild the Eleona ( Paternoster Church ) on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem did not come to a conclusion.

research

Trilhe's research was important for several projects in the history of the Cistercian Order.

  • During his second novitiate, Trilhe and André Malet were commissioned by Abbot Candide Albalat (1854–1915) to standardize the Cistercian rite. The result of these efforts was the Manuale Caeremoniarum in missa et altaris ministerio juxta ritum sacri ordinis cisterciensis servandum ad usum monachorum strictioris observantiae auctoritate et mandato capituli generalis editum (Westmalle, 1908, 1948). Trilhe put his conception of the early liturgy down in an extensive lexicon article.
  • In 1927 Trilhe discovered the so-called Summa Cartae Caritatis (SCC) in a manuscript in the Paris National Library , a forerunner of the only known tradition of the Carta Caritatis . This text was published by Tiburtius Hümpfner after his death through the mediation of Alexis Presse (1932).
  • Trilhe left behind an extensive historical collection of the files of the Cistercian General Chapter , which Alexis Presse entrusted to the brother Joseph-Marie Canivez for publication. They appeared in eight volumes from 1933 to 1941; Trilhe is not mentioned as an employee of the plant.
