Augustin Aimable Dumon-Dumortier (born December 4, 1791 in Lille , † January 28, 1852 in Tournai ) was a Belgian industrialist , diplomat and President of the Senate .

biography

After his marriage to Euphrosine Agnès Dumortier, he first became co-owner and later sole owner of the large lime distillery of their father in Tournai. In order to be able to assert himself even more strongly against the local competition, he founded an association for the purchase of lime with a competitor, Count Albéric du Chastel .

After his naturalization in the newly created state of Belgium in 1831, he was also politically active and first became a member of the Tournau municipal council and then in 1835 as a representative of the Liberals in the Senate . For his services he was made a knight of the Leopold Order in 1843 . On August 12, 1847 he was appointed governor of the province of Hainaut .

After a law in 1848 banned the simultaneous membership in the Senate and the activity as provincial governor, he resigned as governor and instead became President of the Senate on June 27, 1848. At the same time he also became mayor of Tournai. When he was President of the Senate of the Dutch King Wilhelm III. attended, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Oak Crown . He held the office of President of the Senate until his death.
