The Augustus Lutheran Church ( German Lutheran Augustus Church ) is a historically significant church in Trappe , Pennsylvania . She belongs to a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .
history
The church was built from 1743 by the pietistic pastor Henry Melchior Mühlenberg , who is considered the "patriarch" of the Lutheran Church in the Thirteen Colonies . The dedication took place in October 1746. It was named after her August Hermann Francke , founder of the Francke Foundations , who was a great role model for Muhlenberg and it had encouraged his missionary work in Pennsylvania.
Even after the construction of a larger church with a tower a few meters to the west in 1852, summer assemblies continued to be held in the Augustus Lutheran Church (now also known as the Old Trappe Church ). It is the oldest surviving Lutheran church in the United States and is considered a very good example of the traditional architectural style of the German settlers in Pennsylvania . The Augustus Lutheran Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 24, 1967 as a monument .
Architecture and equipment
The towerless hall church , built of sandstone , has a polygonal finish behind the altar , with the side windows, following the traditional architectural style in the region, set asymmetrically. In 1745, English parishioners donated a walnut pulpit to the Augustus Lutheran Church . In 1752, a gallery was built in the northeast corner of the interior for the organ, which had recently been imported from Europe. The eroding sandstone wall was plastered in 1814 . Since then the roof has been renewed five times, the last time in 1974. Also in 1814 the interior of the church was painted in the style of the Pennsylvania Dutch . In 1928, the Augustus Lutheran Church underwent an extensive restoration , including the restoration of the wall painting from 1814. In 1968 the window frames were renewed. The original rows of banks have been preserved to this day.
