Life

Henrique Bernardelli was born in Valparaiso in Chile in 1857. He had two brothers, the sculptor Rodolfo and the painter Felix Bernardelli .

In 1865 the Bernadelli family moved to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil because Herinque's parents, a violinist and a dancer, were employed by Emperor Peter II as private tutors for his daughters. In 1867 they moved to Rio de Janeiro . In 1870 he enrolled at the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro and studied there with important painters such as Victor Meirelles and Agostinho José da Mota . In 1878 he became a Brazilian citizen. A year later he traveled to Rome , where he met artists such as Francesco Paolo Michetti and Giovanni Segantini and lived and worked in the Villa Strohl-Fern . He returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1888 and participated in a number of exhibitions: in 1889 at the World Exhibition in Paris , where he won a bronze medal for his work Os Bandeirantes , in 1890 at the General Exhibition of Fine Arts , where he saw the works Dicteriade , Tarantella and Calle de Venezia , as well as in 1893 at the world exhibition in Chicago , where he exhibited his paintings Messalina , Mater and Proclamação da República .

In 1891 he became a teacher of painting at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, which had recently been inaugurated . For inspiration for his works of art, he continued to travel frequently to Italy , including Rome, Naples and Venice . He taught at the school until he was replaced by Eliseu Visconti in 1906 , and around this time began to give private lessons in his studio and at the same time to receive private commissions for works of art.

In 1916 he won the Medal of Honor, one of the highest awards an artist could receive in Brazil. He was also a member of the Supreme Council of Fine Arts.

Bernardelli died on April 6, 1936 in Rio de Janeiro. A large part of his work was donated to the State Art Collection after his death. In Praça do Lido, Copacabana , there is a bust of the sculptor Leão Veloso by Henrique Bernardelli with his brother Rodolfo.
