It feeds mainly on smaller fish and crustaceans . The name Aulacocephalus means (from Greek) "furrow head" (because of the well-developed lateral line organs of the head ).

distribution

The blue soap bass is found in the Indo-Pacific from South Africa to Japan and New Zealand . It is rare and seems more in subtropical north and south of 20 regions latitude to occur. Find reports from its northern range are from Japan, Korea , Taiwan and northeast China, in its southern range it was found near New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands , Mauritius , Réunion and south of Durban . Only in Thailand and Rapa Iti were populations found in tropical regions. It prefers rock reefs at depths of twenty to 350 meters and often hides in caves and crevices.

features

Blue soap bass have a massive, high-backed body. They are deep blue in color with a golden yellow longitudinal band that extends (starting at the mouth, following the back line) to the top of the tail root. The dorsal fin has nine hard and twelve soft rays, the anal fin has three hard and nine soft rays. The skin of the fish, like that of the soap bass of the Grammistini tribes, contains the extremely bitter poison Grammistin . The striking contrasting color is therefore to be understood as a warning .
