Aupeo! Personal Radio is a non-linear, personalized Internet radio based on a hybrid recommendation technology. The basis is an algorithm developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT), which automatically assigns attributes to each song. These are supplemented by employees. In addition, the interactions of the listeners are saved and taken into account when creating personalized streams . Aupeo! is licensed as a webcaster in over 40 countries . The company was founded in 2008 as Aupeo GmbH in Berlin and is venture capital financed. The database currently contains around 900,000 titles. Aupeo was taken over by Panasonic-Automotive in 2013. The service from AUPEO! is currently available in more than 2 million vehicles worldwide. More than 20 automobile manufacturers such as Ford, VW, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover are partners of Aupeo.

functionality

The recommendation technology takes a hybrid approach that pursues the rapid assignment of musical attributes through an automated process with human refinement.

The Fraunhofer algorithm

For the automatic sorting of the music, Aupeo! an algorithm from the Fraunhofer Institute . This first analyzes the musical properties of the tracks in the Aupeo! Database - such as rhythm, timbre, mood and tempo. Then relationship patterns to other titles are established and pieces that are similar in terms of their musical properties are linked. In order to refine the result, metadata such as genre, subgenre and tags with the artist's origin are then included. After the automated assignment of attributes, a music editor checks the created tags and corrects them if necessary before a song is transferred to the database.

Personalization by handset

The listener starts his personalized radio with a genre selection, with a prepared theme station or enters the name of an artist. In the database, songs with the corresponding attributes are compiled into a non-reproducible radio stream. There is no visible playlist, but the listener can skip tracks or rate them with “Love” and “Ban”. These interactions are assigned to his user profile and flow into the further creation of the radio program.

Technical background and availability

The service is available on a wide variety of platforms. Since June 2011, an HTML5 web interface has replaced the previously used Flash player . There are also apps for iPhone , iPod touch , iPad , Windows Phone , Android and Symbian . The service is also available on other internet-enabled devices via a non-public programming interface (API). These include web radio devices, televisions, set-top boxes, netbooks and - via smartphones - cars. Manufacturers such as Loewe AG , Philips , Asus , Acer , Nokia , Mini , Onkyo , TechniSat and Sonos are known as partners . The Aupeo! Streams are available in different formats depending on the device used, ranging from 48 kbps HE-AACv2 to 192 kbps MP3 .

Business model

Aupeo! is venture capital financed, among others by the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB). The service is funded by advertising, which includes audio advertising and banner ads. Alternatively, Aupeo! Subscribe for a fee, which eliminates the advertising and the restriction to 6 skips per hour. In addition, the audio quality is increased to 192 kbps.

Legal background

Aupeo! is not an on-demand service, but falls under the so-called operating requirement for webcasting, which was created by the IFPI (international association for all sound recording companies worldwide). Under this Aupeo! Music usage contracts concluded for more than 40 countries. At the same time, the authors or their publishers are also remunerated through the contracts with the collecting societies, such as GEMA in Germany .

Shutdown of the service

Aupeo discontinued the service (direct customer business) on November 30, 2016. Since the takeover by Panasonic, the company has been developing in-car systems for the vehicle industry, especially Audi. Aupeo announced that Audi owners who receive the service via the vehicles' onboard system will not be affected by the setting.
