The Offlumer See is by gravel - and sand mining incurred Stretch in North Rhine-Westphalia and is the Neuenkirchener peasantry Offlum on the Muensterlaender Kiessandzug .

history

Since the 19th century there has been sand and gravel mining in numerous places on the Münsterland gravel sand drift, a deposit from the Saale Ice Age . After the invasion of the British troops at the end of the Second World War , the so-called Duke fir trees were felled here and a tank cemetery was set up. After the clearing of the site in 1951, the mining of the rich quartz deposits began on a large scale.

The Westphalian sand and clay works Dr. Müller & Co. , later Euroquarz GmbH , had been operating a gravel works a few 100 m southeast of what would later become the Offlumer See since 1937. The company was able to use its existing loading facilities on Wettringer Strasse and the rail connection to the Rheine – Ochtrup railway line (now the cycle path). The deep sanding was done first with a floating dredger and later also with suction dredgers . The material was temporarily stored in large hopper silos and transported by conveyor belts to the processing plant on the railway line. In the 1960s, up to 600 people were busy extracting sand and gravel at Lake Offlumer.

The gravel and sand extracted was mainly used in the construction industry, but there were also more unusual purposes. For example, special sand served the railroad as a brake. In special grades, quartz gravel from Offlum is still used today as filter gravel in water treatment . Special grades of quartz sand were exported all over the world, even as far as the Sahara .

Water quality

The lake has excellent water quality and is rich in fish. The whole lake lies in the water protection zone 3a of the waterworks of the city of Ochtrup .

Recreation area

Sand extraction has been discontinued since 2005 and the technical facilities have now been dismantled. In addition to the now almost 50 hectare lake, only three large funnel silos testify to the decades of activity. As part of the Regionale 2004 (project: "Jump over the gravel bank" , which also includes the Haddorfer Lakes ) the Offlumer See has become a tourist attraction for Neuenkirchen. Among other things, a beach promenade was built and the hopper silos moved. They now stand above the beach promenade as a viewing platform that can be seen from afar and are called funnel towers. A lakeside café on the beach promenade was opened at Easter 2007. Since 2008 there have been plans to make the lake and the surrounding area even more attractive with additional offers.
