history

Frohberg's castle observation tower on Monzonite (a) and Cretaceous marine deposits (b), around 1875.

The area around the Hohe Stein was already settled in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, there was probably a calvary on the Hohen Stein .

The area around the Hohe Stein was described in 1640 when trading for a local arable property. The entry read: “On the Plauen mountains near the big stone”. In the 19th century a quarry was operated on the Hohen Stein, which Friedrich August Frohberg bought in 1862 for 600 thalers. Frohberg opened his inn "Zum Hohen Stein" in 1862 and in 1864 had the stone lookout tower that still exists today built. In 1882, the rocky reefs above the Plauenschen Grund near the Hohe Stein were made accessible to visitors as viewing points. In the area north of the rock, the Obere Bienertpark was created in 1906 as one of the four Bienert parks .

Observation tower

The 12 m high observation tower Hoher Stein was initially named after its builder, master blacksmith Friedrich August Frohberg , who had a bust of the king attached to the tower in honor of King Friedrich August II with the inscription: Frohbergs Burg 1864 . Later it was popularly known as the Hoher Stein . In 1928 the perforated masonry, typical of the time, was closed and a reinforced concrete roof was put on. During the GDR era, the observation tower and the surrounding park fell into disrepair. Even after the political change in 1989, not much changed at first, so that the tower had to be closed in 1996. It was not until 2003 that extensive renovation work was carried out with funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Weißeritz urban development concept and funds from the City of Dresden's Green Space Office. The tower was reopened in December 2003 and has since become a popular destination for Dresden residents and their guests with the 9.5 m high viewing platform.

“Memorial stone” and “observation tower” are now protected as cultural monuments.

geology
