Kalmit observation tower

The Kalmit observation tower is a tower on the eponymous Kalmit , the highest mountain in the Palatinate Forest .

panorama

After the observation tower built on the summit in 1868 collapsed, the main association of the Palatinate Forest Association built a new, 21 m high observation tower in 1928/29 . From the beginning it was equipped with living quarters, electric light and running water. From this tower one had a comprehensive panoramic view, not only of the entire Palatinate Forest and the Vosges to the south , but also to the mountain ranges of the Hunsrück , Taunus , Odenwald and Black Forest on a clear day . In the opinion of contemporaries at the time, the Kalmit was therefore “the most beautiful panoramic mountain in the Palatinate”. In the meantime there are various measuring and radio systems in and on the tower, so that it was initially temporarily and completely closed to the public in recent decades.

Relay station

In addition to the Rheinpfalz police headquarters , the leaseholder of the tower, radio amateurs also use the height and location of the Kalmit. The local association Z22 of the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) set up a relay radio station at the summit with the call sign DB0XK, whose radio frequency of 145.700  MHz was approved by today's Federal Network Agency on November 30, 1971 . The amateur radio voice relay is located in the tower next to the Kalmithaus.

Weather station

A weather station was set up on the Kalmitturm , which went into operation in March 2007 and is carried out as a joint project by various operators. With this, a meteorological tradition was taken up and continued, since until the beginning of the Second World War there was a station of the Reich Office for Weather Service on the Kalmit , which was of particular importance due to its exposed location.

Distant vision measuring station

In 2012, a special device for distance vision measurement was installed on the Kalmitturm ; The purpose is to record the visual climate in the Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges biosphere reserve. While many unmanned weather stations automatically measure visibility in the area between 0 and 10 km relevant for road safety, the measuring station on the Kalmit is designed for the area from 10 to 390 km, which is decisive for the fine dust content of the air. Measured values and the measurement image are accessible via the Fern -sehen im Pfälzerwald project , which is managed by the House of Sustainability in Johanniskreuz , an institution of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Forests. The measurements also serve to inform nature lovers in good time about exceptional visibility, which is quite rare and difficult to predict.
