The Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto Square (until May 4, 2018 Ausspannplatz ) is a central square in Windhoek , Namibia . It was named after the former Angolan President Agostinho Neto . The square is located at the southern end of Independence Avenue in the city center ( Windhoek-Central ), on the street of the same name and the park of the same name.
history
The (southern) unwinding area was created at the end of the 19th century on a flat surface at the southern end of the city at that time as a place where the draft animals were pulled in and "unhitched" and fed by the carts of ox, donkey or horse drawn carts or carriages ; The teams of cattle were also parked in the then largely free field. The name of the place was shaped by the relaxation of the animals after an arduous journey.
Today's appearance
Today the Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto Square is a large roundabout at which Independence Avenue becomes Jan Jonker Weg and Rehobother Road. In the middle of the square is a large sealed traffic island on which there is a scaffolding with City Light Boards mounted on three sides , which are visible from afar. At the lower end of these panels, the words “Ausspannplatz” could be read from all directions until the mid-2000s. There is no pedestrian access to this area.
There is a branch of the Namibian Post (Nampost) on the square . The Angolan embassy can also be found at the “Agostinho Neto Park” located here.
