Abraham Bernard May

Abraham Bernard May (born September 28, 1912 in Bloemfontein , South Africa ; † October 8, 1993 in Windhoek , Namibia ), mostly just AB May , was a South African - Namibian surgeon and mayor of the Namibian capital Windhoek. He had Lithuanian - Latvian parents of Jewish faith.

After studying medicine at the University of Cape Town , May 1940 moved with his wife, Myrtle Rosen, to work as a doctor in Gobabis in South West Africa . He was a member of the Windhoek city administration for 24 years and between 1988 and 1991 the last mayor of Windhoek to be elected under the South African occupation. He was highly regarded as the founder and president of the Namibian Cancer Association (1968).

May was married to Sarah Johanna Josina Davin for a second time until his death. A street in Windhoek, not far from the relaxation area, and the cancer center of the Windhoek Central Hospital are named after him.
