Exhibition Elisabeth of Thuringia

Under the title Elisabeth of Thuringia. A European saint was held on the occasion of the 800th birthday of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia from July 7th to November 19th 2007, the 3rd Thuringian State Exhibition at the Wartburg and in the Predigerkirche (Eisenach) . It took place preferentially at the historical sites in Thuringia, where the saint spent most of her life. With 237,896 visitors, the exhibition advanced to be by far the most visited of all the Thuringian state exhibitions shown so far .

Main topics

Elisabeth arrived at the Wartburg in 1211 at the age of four and the castle remained the center of her life until the death of her husband Ludwig IV , the Landgrave of Thuringia in 1227. The historical life of Elisabeth, her early canonization and the beginning of her veneration of saints as well as the splendor of the Thuringian Landgrafenhof were documented at this exhibition location.

The Predigerkirche in Eisenach showed the persistent after-effects of the saints as a role model for human behavior and social responsibility. The contrasting focus of this exhibition was the everyday reality of the common people in the city of Eisenach and the farmers - Elisabeth's poor world .

The Jena scientists at the Friedrich Schiller University , Matthias Werner (professor for Thuringian regional history and medieval history) and Dieter Blume (professor for medieval art history) were responsible for the scientific preparation of the exhibition . The exhibition took place in close cooperation with the Wartburg Foundation .

Outstanding exhibits

In the exhibition at the Wartburg, around 350 high-quality original exhibits, which are directly connected with the life of St. Elisabeth, were shown together. Among the most outstanding works of art were the wedding dress of Elisabeth from Andechs , the Elisabeth psalter from Cividale and the landgrave psalter from Stuttgart .

In the framework of the exhibition, the medieval ensemble Capella Antiqua Bambergensis performed the concert Music of the Rose .

In addition to the large national exhibition, additional events and exhibitions were held at numerous locations related to the saint.
