Autonomous County (China)
Autonomous counties ( Chinese 自治縣 / 自治县 , Pinyin zìzhìxiàn ) are administrative divisions of the People's Republic of China at the district level. There are currently 117 autonomous counties (December 31, 2013). There are also three autonomous banners . The number of these 120 autonomous administrative units is relatively stable. On the one hand, the number will hardly increase, since meanwhile all the districts that have a right to ethnic autonomy according to the constitution of the People's Republic of China have also been able to realize this, on the other hand, the number will hardly decrease, since a conversion into urban districts or urban districts (such as it is common in circles) would lead to the loss of autonomy rights. Autonomous districts are usually subordinate to the higher district level. In the city of Chongqing , which is directly under the government, and in the province of Hainan , however, they are directly subordinate to the provincial level, which has refrained from installing a district level at all or expanding the district level to counties (Hainan).
The main places and thus the seat of the district government are usually large municipalities (in rare cases municipalities), which often already have a strongly urban character.
