Avery is a small impact crater near the eastern edge of Earth's moon , near the western bank of Mare Smythii . To the east is Haldane Crater and to the southwest are Carrillo and Gilbert Craters .

Avery is circular, bowl-shaped and has a small central crater floor.

Before it was given its own name by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1976 , it was referred to as 'Gilbert U'.
