Axel von Maltzahn was the eldest son of the manor owner and later President of the Province of Pomerania , Helmuth von Maltzahn (1840–1923), and his wife Anna von Rohrscheidt (1847–1913). He studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1887 he became a member of the Corps Vandalia Heidelberg . After completing his studies and doctorate, he entered the Prussian civil service. In 1895 he passed the government assessor exam with the government in Düsseldorf . As a secret senior government councilor and lecturer in the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, he headed the German food industry during the First World War . In retirement, he later lived on his manor VALZ .

Axel von Maltzahn married Helene von Platen in 1898 (born January 30, 1879). The two had three daughters and three sons.
