Parasite Eve is a video game from the Japanese software manufacturer Square , which is based on the Japanese novel of the same name by Hideaki Sena . The role-playing game with action-adventure elements was released in 1998 for the Sony PlayStation .

The game continued with Parasite Eve II in 2000 and The 3rd Birthday in 2010 .

action

The plot revolves around the policewoman Aya Brea and the opera singer Melissa Pearce in the city of New York . Due to her evolutionarily highly developed mitochondria, Melissa mutates into another being, which henceforth calls itself Eve . The plot in the game is mainly about the fact that the mitochondria in Melissa's / Eve's body have achieved their own consciousness and are trying to replace humans as the dominant species in the world.

Eve has the ability to instill her will into the mitochondria of other people or living things. For example, thanks to the mitochondria, it can let a person go up in flames, which is also shown very impressively in a video sequence . In addition, the mitochondria have the ability to make changes to their "host" at the cellular level: For example, shortly after the start of the game, you can see a rat mutating, growing to 10 times its normal size and splitting its tail into three parts . For some reason, however, Aya is immune to this influence, which will be clarified later in the game. With the help of her immune mitochondria, Aya can launch powerful attacks that, like in a classic role-playing game, can confidently be described as magic . For her part, Aya tries with all her might to dissuade Eve from her plan.

backgrounds

Parasite Eve was released almost exactly between the seventh and eighth Final Fantasy part, which previously gave the game the image of a "stopgap". However, since the game was technically of such high quality (by the standards at the time), it was able to shake off the image quickly. Parasite Eve contains impressive FMV sequences, which back then could definitely be described as groundbreaking.

The game itself is graphically similar to Final Fantasy VII or the Resident Evil series: polygon characters run on a precalculated background. The game system is difficult to compare with the first two titles mentioned; During fights, like in Resident Evil, you can move at any time, but the fight is not action-oriented, but rather strategy-heavy like in Final Fantasy: you cannot fire at any time, you have to wait until a timeline has been filled. In general, the game is set up like a role-playing game, for example there are hitpoints , fights are carried out in a battle sequence like in Final Fantasy, and experience points are awarded for defeated enemies .

The game was released on March 29, 1998 in Japan and on September 9, 1998 in the United States. On November 4, 2010, it was also made available for download on the PlayStation Network in Japan and on March 15, 2011 in the USA.

Trivia

  • When you have finished the game you can start the game in a difficult mode called EX-Mode . There, in the Chrysler Building , you can complete a secondary task, which consists of fighting stronger versions of the monsters from the main game for 70 floors, and killing an alternative boss on the 77th (71 to 76 are empty) floor - including an alternative ending. Another difference is that in EX mode you get a large sum of bonus points at the beginning of each day. Otherwise the main game remains unchanged.
  • The game is produced by the creator of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi , and Tetsuya Nomura is responsible for the character design.
  • The title track of the intro video, one of the main musical themes of the game, is called Primal Eyes and comes from the Japanese composer Yōko Shimomura .
