az-ziriklī
Chair ad-Din az-Ziriklī ( Arabic ﺧﻴﺮ ﺍﻟﺪﻴﻦ الزركل Khairaddin az-Zirikli , DMG Ḫair ad-Dīn az-Ziriklī ; born on June 25, 1893 in Beirut ; died on November 25, 1976 in Cairo ), also with the spelling Kheireddine Zarkali , was a Syrian-Arab poet, scholar (including literary scholar and biographer) and journalist of Kurdish descent.
Life
He lived in Syria , Saudi Arabia , Jordan , Lebanon and Egypt . Zirikli was a Syrian nationalist, d. H. Opponent of the French League of Nations mandate . He worked as a magazine editor (the newspaper al-Mufid in Damascus) and wrote press articles himself. He joined Abd al-Aziz's foreign service in the 1920s and was appointed ambassador to various countries.
Works
- Az-Ziriklī is the author of a frequently reissued eight-volume biographical lexicon with the short title al-Aʿlām , which includes the most famous men and women among the Arabs, Arabists and Orientalists who died up to 1975. The full title of the work is al-Aʿlām, Qāmūs tarāǧīm li-ašhar ar-riǧāl wa an-nisāʾ min al-ʿArab wa al-mustaʿribīn wa al-mustašrifīn ( digitized from the 15th edition from 2002 ). There are also two supplementary volumes by Muhammad Chair Ramadān Yūsuf, which deal with people who died between 1975 and 1996 ( digitized version ).
- King Faisal commissioned az-Ziriklī with a work on the rule of Abd al-Aziz , which appeared in four volumes in 1970.
