history

Local public transport in Rome was operated by private companies from 1845. The company Società Romana Tramways Omnibus (SRTO) received its first public contract for this from the city of Rome in 1876 . The first trams were horse-drawn trams or steam trams . In 1895 the first electric tram opened between Piazza San Silvestro and Roma Termini station . In 1900 the monopoly SRTO operated ten bus routes and 15 tram routes, eleven of which were electrified.

In 1909, at the suggestion of Mayor Ernesto Nathan, the municipal Azienda Tramvie Municipali (ATM) was founded, which began operations in 1911 and gradually took over the SRTO from 1919 to 1929. In 1927 the urban transport company was renamed Azienda Tramvie e Autobus del Governatorato (ATAG). At that time the tram network of Rome had reached its greatest extent. In 1930 the tram lines in the city center were replaced by buses due to increasing car traffic. The first trolleybus routes started operating in 1937 . On August 9, 1944, the ATAG was renamed Azienda Tramvie e Autobus del Comune (ATAC) and by 1948 war-related damage and other restrictions had been removed. In the 1950s, the tram was largely abandoned in favor of trolleybuses. The latter were in turn replaced by buses until 1972.

In 2000 the ATAC handed over the operation of the bus routes to the city-controlled company Trambus and to other companies. However, the ATAC remained the owner of vehicles, with trolleybuses running again from 2005 , and the associated infrastructure. In addition, planning and monitoring tasks remained, which is why it was transformed into the Agenzia per la Mobilità del Comune di Roma (“Transport Agency of the City of Rome”) in 2006 . At the same time, the municipal company Metropolitana di Roma SpA (Met.Ro.) was founded to operate the underground and suburban railways . These railways were previously operated by the COTRAL consortium .

On January 1, 2010, the agency and the companies Met.Ro. and Trambus the limited company Azienda per i Trasporti Autoferrotranviari del Comune di Roma (ATAC). Today it handles almost all public transport in Rome.

After Marco Rettighieri took over the position of managing director in February 2016, numerous irregularities within the company became known. So Rettighieri found that of the 1980 ATAC vehicles that were on paper, only 1410 actually existed. The public prosecutor's office started an investigation.

The PD politician and Italian Senator Stefano Esposito said in this context that ATAC “was and is the safe of politics. From all. No one excepted. "
