history

COTRAL bus

In 1899, the private Società delle Tranvie e Ferrovie Elettriche di Roma (“Rome Electric Tram and Railway Company”), or STFER for short, was founded in Rome. Because of various problems with the already existing Società Romana Tramways Omnibus , it was supposed to take over the tram operation between Rome and the Castelli Romani, which did not happen until 1906. In 1928 the company was nationalized. In 1941, STFER took over the suburban railway line Rome – Ostia Lido opened in 1924 and the suburban railway line Rome – San Cesareo opened in 1917 . On this occasion the company was re-established under the name STEFER.

After the Second World War , STEFER went to the city of Rome. From 1954 she operated the first line of the Rome underground , in 1969 she bought the Roma Flaminio – Viterbo railway . In 1976 the Azienda Cosortile Trasporti Laziali (ACOTRAL) emerged from STEFER and other regional transport companies in Lazio , and from this in 1993 the Consorzio Trasporti Pubblici Lazio (COTRAL). In 2000 the consortium was replaced by two joint stock companies: LiLa (Linee Laziali) took over the regional bus transport, Metroferro the underground and suburban railways. In the following year LiLa was renamed Compagnia Trasporti Laziali (COTRAL) and Metroferro into Met.Ro. ( Metropolitana di Roma SpA , ATAC since 2010).

In 2008, COTRAL separated the transport company from the infrastructure with the establishment of the subsidiary COTRAL Patrimonio SpA
