Spring and stork fountain

Stork fountain with a spring

The spring, known today as Schliekersbrunnen, was already known as a healthy well around 1730, as people believed in the health-promoting effects of the spring water. The spring developed into an excursion destination for the Hamelin city population. As a result, hospitality huts were built for the guests; coffee, beer, wine and brandy were served there. When Hamelin was besieged during the Seven Years' War, the excursion system ended. After the end of the war in 1763, the citizens of Hamelin collected donations for the reconstruction of a hospitality hut. Around 1780 the Hamelin citizen Schlieker took care of the spring and had it provided with ashlar stones and a well structure. That is why the fountain bears the name of its builder as "Schliekersbrunnen".

Today the fountain appears as a walled fountain enclosure that is a few meters deep. The well opening is covered with panes. There is a symbolic stork figure on it. Individual plastic dolls can be seen on the surface of the water and on the wall of the fountain. The fountain is covered with a wooden structure. The facility was last renovated in 2011.

According to the story, a stork brings the children of Hamelin out of the depths of the well into the light of day. If children get pieces of sugar from the innkeeper and throw them into the well to wish they had siblings, the stork should bring as many children into the family as pieces of sugar were thrown into it.
