Route

The trolleybus Rome ( Italian Rete filoviaria di Roma ) is the trolleybus system of the Italian capital Rome . The 90 line connects the suburbs north of the old town with the central station Roma Termini , whereby the vehicles in the city center between Porta Pia and the terminus at Termini station run with the help of an auxiliary battery drive without overhead lines. The operator is the local transport company ATAC .

history

Rome's trolleybus network in 1960

An extensive trolleybus system already existed in the Italian capital between 1937 and 1972. In the end, this only consisted of three lines, which, however, all had the same number due to the use of a red line signal or a crossed line signal . This means that the names 47, 47 and 47 existed .

Route network

Existing network

The system , which has been in operation since 2005 to 2019, currently consists of an express line that does not stop at all bus stops along the 19.5 kilometer route:

line route Cycle sequence Type
90 Termini - Porta Pia - Nomentana - Corso Sempione - Monte Cervialto - Labia 6-7 minutes Radial line

The route begins north of the city center in the 4th municipality . The starting point is the Parco di Largo Labia in the Serpentara district , which is crossed on Viale Titina de Fillippo . Circumnavigating the campus of the Pontifical Salesian University in the northeast, the route runs on Via Monte Cervialto inwards through the Val Melaina district and further on Via delle Isole Curzolane and Via delle Vigne Nuove through Tuffelo . The route splits in the Monte Sacro district . While the trolleybuses going into town drive a loop through Viale Carnaro , the direct route out of town via Viale Adriatico is used.

After crossing the Aniene on the Ponte Tazio , you will reach the 2nd municipality , which you will cross almost in a straight line on the Via Nomentana . In the city center, where the tram lines 3 and 19 cross at Viale Regina Margherita , the overhead line ends not far north of Porta Pia . The catenary funnel and the end of the overhead lines are located on Via Nomentana approximately at the junction with Via Reggio Emilia .

To the south of Piazza di Porta Pia , the battery-operated trolleybuses run through Via Venti Settembre , Via Pastrengo to Piazza delle Finanze and further on Via Volturno to Termini station . On the way back you drive between Piazza delle Finanze and Piazza Pia via Via Cernaia and Via Palestro .

A line 90D to Largo Pugliese , which was set up on December 1, 2008 and started at Termini station and branched off about halfway from the route , was discontinued on June 18, 2012. At the northeast end of this branch line, the trolleybuses on Viale Jonio ran for around 1.5 kilometers, also with a battery- powered auxiliary drive, due to the lack of overhead lines. The connection and disconnection took place at the Adriatico / Lampedusa stop in Monte Sacro .

Future network

Starting from the underground stations EUR Palasport , EUR Fermi and Laurentina in the south of the city, a further line network is to be built in the coming years, which should better connect the southern suburbs to the metro system . The project is essentially divided into two corridors:

The starting point of the western corridor is a loop ride in the area of the Palasport and Fermi underground stations . From here, the corridor runs south and circles the sports and multifunctional arena PalaLottomatica on both sides. At the Oceano Pacifico intersection , a stretch is to lead further west into the Castellaccio district , while the other branch continues to follow the Via Cristoforo Colombo artery and ends on the other side of the A90 ring road in the Torrino Mezzocammino development area .

The heart of the eastern corridor is a bus lane on Via Laurentina , starting from the subway station of the same name to the south. The eastern route is to run out of the city largely independently of individual traffic. The end point is planned in the Tor Pagnotta area . The new trolleybus 74 was inaugurated on July 8, 2019. It runs on its own corridor from Metro Laurentina to Fonte Laurentina.

service

The section from Termini station to Porta Pia is not electrified by overhead lines, as it was assumed that the two-wire overhead lines would have disfigured the streets in the city center. On this part of the route, the trolleybuses are powered by on-board batteries, which are automatically charged along the sections where the cables are provided.

  • 60 Express Largo Pugliese ↔ Piazza Venezia (only electrified between Porta Pia and Piazza Sempione);
  • 74 Metro Laurentina ↔ Fonte Laurentina (5.5 km);

Vehicle fleet

Solaris Trollino 18 in battery operation at Roma Termini station

30 articulated trolleybuses of the Solaris Bus & Coach Trollino 18 type with electrical equipment from Škoda Electric (formerly Ganz Transelektro ) are in use. The vehicles delivered in 2004 and 2005 have the company numbers 8501 to 8530 and have rechargeable batteries , which can also be used to drive electrically on the catenary-free section in the city center.

The Polish trolleybuses are 18 meters long, 2.55 meters wide and 3.49 meters high.

In addition, 45 articulated trolleybuses of the BredaMenarinibus / Škoda Avancity + SF type have been in operation since spring 2017 . In contrast to the Solaris Trollino, the wagons do not have a battery, but a diesel auxiliary drive .

Depot

The vehicles are deployed from the Rimesse depot , which is located on Via di Monte Sacro in a loop of the Aniene . From the Sempione stop on the northern bridgehead of the Ponte Tazio , the company premises can be reached by trolleybuses using battery power. There is no overhead line for business trips to and from the depot.
