Network plan

The Cagliari trolleybus is the only system of its kind on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia . It consists of three lines and is operated by the Consorzio Trasporti e Mobilità (CTM). During its greatest expansion, the network, opened in 1952, had seven lines.

Lines

The current trolleybus network consists of three lines, one of which is diameter and two are radial . The latter have largely identical lines. The central hub of the network is the Piazza Matteotti on the Via Roma harbor promenade, which is used by all lines . This is also where the south-western end of lines 31 and 32 is located . The system's main route, used by all trolleybus routes, runs through Via Roma and Viale Bonaria to the intersection at Cimitero Monumentale di Bonaria .

line route Stops Cycle sequence Type
5 Vergine di Lluc - Stazione FS - Cinquini 28/30 08-11 minutes Diameter line
30th Matteotti - Selargius - Quartu Sant'Elena - Matteotti 28/22 10-11 minutes Radial line
31 Matteotti - Quartu Sant'Elena - Selargius - Matteotti 22/28 10-11 minutes Radial line

The Line 5 begins in the north of the city center, where they by means of a long-range loop travel counterclockwise about Via Diego Cartello , Via Ernesto Monsignor Piovella the terminal in the Via Giovanni Cinquini achieved. The way back is via Via della Quirra , Via Ciociaria and Via Is Mirrionis . It follows this from the junction of the loop past the university sports grounds to Giardini Pubblici . On Viale Luigi Merello you continue through the city until at the end of the route the route splits up due to one-way tours. In the area of the train station ( Stazione FS ) line 5 meets the other trolleybus lines. It then runs southeast of the main route on Via Milano , Via della Pineta and over the Ponte Vittorio . This is followed by the junction of the south-eastern block loop, which is also driven counter-clockwise. The last stop, Vergine di Lluc , is reached via Viale San Bartolomeo . On the Viale del Poetto it goes back towards the center.

The lines 30 and 31 extend from the end of the main line on the Via del Cimitero and Via Dante Alighieri north and then on the Via San Benedetto and Via Guglielmo Marconi out to the northeast from the city. After a short overland section, the junction of the reversible loop through Selargius and Sant'Elena, which can be driven on from both sides, follows Via I Maggio . In the center of Selargius , the overhead lines for both directions lead through different streets ( Via Istria and Via Daniele Manin ) due to one-way guides . The loop continues via Via Carlo Rosselli and Via Brigata Sassari to the neighboring Sant'Elena . From there on the Guglielmo Marconi it goes back towards Cagliari. While line 30 traverses the loop clockwise , line 31 runs in the opposite direction . At the Piazza Repubblica there is a transition to the Metrocagliari .

history

Line network in 1968 to its greatest extent

In December 1952, line 5 between Piazza D'Armi and Piazza Amsicora was electrified. To the east of the train station, it still largely follows the former route today, whereas in the past it did not run along Via Roma along the port, but through Via Manno in the old town. Shortly thereafter, line 6 followed , which ran through the narrow old town streets of the Castello from Piazza Palazzo via Roma and past the basilica in Bonaria to Borgo Sant'Elia , where a turning loop was set up not far from the sea. The Line 7 started on the station square Piazza Matteotti and led on Via Manno in the former development area in the northern Via Dante Alighieri .

At the beginning of the 1960s, two more trolleybus lines were added: Line 10 from Piazza Yenne to the beach to Calamosca followed over large sections of the existing line 6 while line 11 started from Crocicchio di Sant'Avendrace (today's Piazza Trento ) on via Manno and via Garibaldi and via Rossini , the then urban development area Largo Genari opened up.

In 1962, with the discontinuation of the overland tram from Cagliari via Pirri, Monserrato and Selargius to Sant'Elena and the resulting establishment of the overland trolleybus routes C rosso ( red line number ) and C nero (black line number), the largest expansion of the network was achieved. The route ran directly from Cagliari to Selargius and Sant'Elena, Pirri and Monseratto were connected by bus. While the red line ran through Selargius and ended in front of the church in Sant'Elena, the black line that passed Selargius also opened up the east of Sant'Elena through a route to Piazza IV Novembre .

From the early 1970s onwards, the network began to shrink. First lines 10 and 11 were discontinued. Lines 6 and 7 followed by the end of the decade, leaving a remainder of the network consisting of line 5 and the two overland routes. From 1990 the last urban route was discontinued and in Quartu Sant'Elena the route leading through the center to Piazza IV Novembre was abandoned in 1993 in favor of the loop in both directions that still exists today. With only two lines left, which were given the designation CED and CES as part of the discontinuation , the network had now experienced the greatest decline.

From 1998, the operator CTM decided to rely more on electric vehicles again. After a great deal of overhead lines were stuck the old system on the operating conditions, the resumption placed on the section between Piazza d'Armi and Piazza Amsicora line 5 with the inclusion of contact wires of the old 6 no major problems. 2000 was the route to San Bartolomeo expanded to the southeast, and in 2002 they added a new loop guide in the northern part of the city. Although there were several considerations to electrify line 6 again, the old lines were removed for the time being in 2012.

Facilities and technology

depot

The Santa Maria depot is located on Viale Francesco Ciusa and is connected to the trolleybus network by two operating routes .

Single lane sections

A special feature of the Cagliari trolleybus network was a total of three sections that were equipped with just one overhead line for both directions:

  • In the center of Cagliari in the Castello (In the area of Piazza Indipendencia )
  • In the southeast of Cagliari on the Via Calamosca (between Vergine die Lluc and the final stop Calamosca )
  • In Sant'Elena in Via Merello (between Via Guglielmo Marconi and Via Sant'Antonio )

While the contact wires in the Castello and Calamosca had long since disappeared, the section in Sant'Elena existed until 2012. The air switches were also still in place here. However, since the reversal loop in Piazza IV Novembre was abandoned, the route had no function.

Functionless sections

Over the years, numerous remnants of overhead lines from discontinued lines that got stuck or were not completely dismantled bear witness to the former size of the trolleybus network. While remnants of catenaries quickly disappeared in the city center, they could hold up over the city's streets for a long time. Most recently, the following non-functional sections of the former city network existed:

  • Via Sant'Elia (between the former turning loop of line 6 on Via dei Navigatori and Viale San Bartolomeo )
  • Via della PinetaVia Enrico Pessina (between Piazza della Repubblica and Ponte Vittorio )
  • Via Dante Aligheri (northern section to Via Cao di San Marco without the previously removed loop of line 7 in Via Sant'Alenixedda )
  • Via Francesco PetrarcaVia PergolesiVia Pierluigi da Palestrina (including reversing loop of line 11 via Via Arrigo BoitoVia Gioacchino Rossini )

In Sant'Elena the overhead line got stuck on the following sections:

  • Via Armando DiazVia SiciliaVia Guglielmo Marconi (route and turnaround loop of the Cn line )
  • Via Merello (single-lane section including the turning loop of the Cn line via Via FiumePiazza IV NovembreVia Sant'Antonio )

In 2012, the operator decided to remove the remaining lines in order to save maintenance costs.

In addition, the delivery of 14 new solo trolleybuses of the type Van Hool A 330T is planned for 2015 , the electrical equipment of which will be supplied by Vossloh Kiepe . The cars are to have a 100 kW asynchronous motor. A diesel unit with 100 kW electrical power is provided as the emergency drive system. The contract value for the contract signed in May 2014 is 7.2 million euros. The 14 low-floor cars will then replace the remaining Socimi / Iveco, of which six cars (638, 639, 640, 644, 647 and 651) are currently still operational. The mixed operation with diesel buses, which is currently carried out for this reason, can be omitted with the delivery of the new Van Hools.

Former fleet

Since the start of operations, only Italian-made cars have been used. Some vehicle types, such as the Allen key F140 or the Socimi 8839 , were only used in Cagliari.
